Joints and ArticularCartilage
The performance and mobility of your horseis dramatically affected by how well his joints function. While physicalconditioning can strengthen muscles, bones, and tendons, the tremendous forcesexerted on the skeletal joints (fetlock, knee, stifle and hock) during trainingand competition causes wear and tear to the joint cartilage. Articular cartilageis critical to joint utility. Immersed in synovial fluid, articular cartilageprovides a smooth, low friction surface between bone ends, and transmits loadforces to the underlying bones.
What Can I Expect Using Cosequin
Since Cosequin provides nutrients that affectthe structure and function of the joint, changes may occur gradually. You shouldnotice changes in three to four weeks in most candidates. Some horses may takefive to six weeks to exhibit noticeable change.
Recommendationas a Dietary Supplement
The initial administration period is 4 to 6weeks, however recent studies using Cosequin have shown an early response, inmost horses, by 2 weeks. The response usually improves if the initial amount iscontinued for an additional 4 weeks. If a horse shows little or no responseafter 30 days, extend initial amount for two more weeks.
Average Horse - 3 level scoops AM & PM
Horses over 1,200 lb. - 4 level scoops AM & PM
Overly large horses (warm bloods, draft breeds) may need 4 or 5 scoops AM &PM
Do not lower amount until horse has begun torespond. After achieving a good response, reduce total daily amount by one levelscoop each week. Gradually reducing the amount will help find an individualmaintenance level. Watch the animal's movement and attitude to ensure that it isfeeling comfortable through each weekly transition.
Average Horse - 1 level scoop AM & PM
Horses over 1,200 lb. - 2 level scoops AM & PM
Amount can be increased at any time to maintain desired comfort level. Two orthree days prior to heavy workouts or competition, boost daily dosage back up toinitial loading dose. Continue this level for two to three days aftercompetition, then return to regular maintenance level.
Cosequin can be top dressed on sweet feed. Add asmall amount of water or molasses to get the Cosequin to stick to dry feed. Youmay also administrate orally. Mix Cosequin with a small amount of water ormolasses and dose orally with a syringe.
